Job Title: Mountain Bike Mechanic

Department: Rental/Retail

Reports To: Rental/Retail Manager

Position Status: Full/Part-Time

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Date: March 2025

Job Summary: To outfit guests with appropriate mountain bike rental equipment, perform tune-ups, service and repairs and run registers to sell all rental, repair, retail products.

Essential Functions:

  • Repair, check, and fix bikes following industry and manufacturer standards
  • Prepare bikes on time for the Rental department
  • Take notes of all the work done on bikes and update the database
  • Keep the inventory of the workshop updated
  • Keep the bench and the workshop clean
  • Provide feedback about bicycles for MTB buyers
  • Be customer service oriented and personable
  • Assist with related material (such as bicycle accessories, tools, parts and components)
  • Assist in the overall cleanliness and functionality of the Big Rock Mountain shop
  • Pre-adjust and set up prepaid equipment for rental tech staff
  • Manage end of season bike rebuilds throughout off season and provide finished inventory for sale for MTB seller

NOTE: All Bolton Valley employees are required to perform alternate functions from time to time, both within and outside of their assigned department, particularly during peak periods such as holiday weekends. 

Customer Service Expectations: Mountain Bike Mechanic involves constant, direct customer contact: answering questions, selling products, determining the proper size for equipment, explaining the process of putting the equipment on, etc.  Employees are expected to be courteous and professional in accordance with Bolton’s commitment to providing superior customer service.

Qualifications: 

  • High school education
  • Previous customer service experience preferred
  • Previous cash handling experience helpful

Required Knowledge and Skills: 

  • Excellent customer service & communication skills
  • Advanced knowledge of bikes
  • Interest in mountain biking
  • Ability to complete tasks quickly and under pressure
  • Familiarity with simple hand tools (screwdrivers, wrenches, etc.)
  • Patience

 Physical and Mental Demands: 

  • Prolonged periods of standing and walking short distances
  • Minor lifting (MTB equipment, some boxes up to 20 lbs, Bike racks)
  • High noise levels and crowded spaces during busy times
  • Washing bikes after shop closes each day

 Work Environment: 

  • Work is performed primarily indoors but may include limited outdoor tasks such as moving bike racks
  • Noise levels can be high, and space is crowded during busy times.
  • Potential hazards include tuning equipment with moving belts and sharp components, potentially harmful fumes or chemicals from tuning and cleaning processes, and equipment stored on racks and shelves that could fall.
  • Must use provided personal protective equipment when tuning.
