TWO SPORTS. TWO COMPETITIONS. ONE BIG PARTY.

Join us Saturday April 5th for the revival of the Bolton Valley Spring Thing! It’s our first time doing a pond skim in 10 years, and the first time we’ve ever had mountain bike racing on snow the same day. We’re excited to send the ski season off with a bang and have a big old Bolton Beach Themed party. In addition to the Mountain Bike Dual Slalom and the pond skim, there will also be snow volleyball, a vendor village, prizes, plus live music by DJ Johnny Utah and bluegrass pickers Tallgrass Getdown. This is not a day you want to miss!

Did you know that there are two Green Mountain Club cabins accessible by Bolton Backcountry terrain? Bryant Camp which sleeps 8 in its rustic loft is reachable via a short trail through the nordic area in the mansfield state forest. The second is Bolton cabin located lower on the mountain, across from Timberline Lodge and The Ponds. These two shelters can be rented through the Green Mountain Club from August through the winter for a uniquely beautiful outdoor experience.

Today I meandered my way out to Bryant Camp while checking out the Nordic trails and see how the Disc Golf holes held up this past winter. The route I took was beautiful as the beginnings of bright summer green pop up around tree branches and underbrush. The route I took went up wilderness lift line to the left and onto World Cup. From there I followed WC until taking a right turn to go up Coyote. It was on this trail when I finally noticed that the spotted leaves that were covering the entire forest floor were in fact, Trout Lilies in their early stage.

The two-tone green leaves covered large areas of the ground as the Lilies are colony-forming, and upon closer inspection the early bulbs of spring could be seen hanging over the leaves. Some of the flowers were slightly farther along than others but it seemed as if across the board they would be blooming in the next couple of days. It would appear that in the next week or two the nordic trails will be covered in a huge bloom of trout lilies, with green speckled leaves continuing as far as the eye can see in multiple directions in the backcountry. It’s an excellent time to hike around the mountain, come see for yourself!

Early May at 2,100′ elevation makes for very interesting hiking. There is still (mostly man-made) snow clinging on in the nooks and crannies of the mountain even as the temps climb into the 60’s, and the natural landscape is changing dramatically by the day. Early-season plants like Springbeauties and dandelions have begun to cover large swaths of the hillside, stretching from patches around the base area almost to the summit of Ricker Mountain (Vista Peak).

The hike up to the firetower is about 1,100′ of elevation gain, up the Vista or Wilderness work roads. Today I followed the Wilderness route up until the intersection near Waterfall gap. From there I continued up the vista workroad to the top of the chairlift, and admired the beautiful day from atop the lookout tower. From this 360° vantage point, hikers can take in views of Bolton and the windmill, Camel’s Hump, Mount Mansfield, and Waterbury’s Little River State Park. In my opinion you would be hard pressed to find a VT hike this short with such a great lookout (honorable mention to Nichol’s Ledge in Cabot).

The trees are budding at a very rapid rate, and the wildflowers on the ground are coming in hot as well. Although ramp and fiddlehead season has come and gone, there are plenty of short-lived blossoms that are worth seeking out if you find yourself with the time. Early spring on the mountain is a great time to take in the natural scenery, and each time you go the plantlife is a little farther along!

We carry an attitude of gratitude for all of BV’s partnerships and Unlikely Riders is one that we especially hold dear to our hearts. What started as a small community of like-minded outdoor enthusiasts advocating for reduced barriers to snowsports has now bloomed into a BIPOC non-profit with a focus on finding healing and connection on snow.

UR organizes a series of Community Ski & Ride days in partnership with some local mountains like BV, for new and seasoned members to experience the wonder of sliding on snow. These partners support UR’s mission by providing a private indoor space for members to gather, discounted rental equipment, as well as lift tickets and ski/ride instruction at no cost. The cherry on the sundae here is their ‘Winter Gear Closet’ initiative which collects hundreds of donated items from gloves to ski jackets for all for members to take home and recreate in. These are prime examples of how collectively as an industry we can pull together our resources to create a more equitable and inclusive outdoors.

In the 2022/2023 season UR expanded on their goals to include community leadership development, to empower and embolden members. As of last winter, they offered 29 scholarships across an array of outdoor instructional courses. Per their ‘Impact Report’ there were 15 Unlikely Riders who became PSIA-AASI certified to instruct level 1 Alpine Skiing and Snowboarding and in turn they have enhanced accessibility for current and new members to come. It’s a great privilege to support Unlikely Riders in their mission to instill a sense of belonging for all skiers and riders.

Interested in donating gear? Check out their guidelines here. Or support the cause by making a holiday donation here!

The Bolton Snow Globe has been firing as of late delivering over 4 feet of fresh snow in the last 8 days (!!!) here at the highest base area ski resort elevation in the State of Vermont.

Meanwhile, in nearby lower lying locales it’s been mostly rain and grass throughout including yesterday when we were blanketed in over a foot of fresh snow, but it was all rain from Burlington to about halfway up our access road. Check out Adam DesLauriers dash cam from his Monday drive up the hill if seeing is believing:

Come on up to higher ground… it’s cooler up here!
